President’s Message for Feb 2013
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
We have come a long way since our Club's Installation in July 2012 where we raised S$8,000. The three beneficiaries were Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), Salvation Army Singapore (Room for Improvement) and Build Your Future Today Center, Cambodia (BFT).
However, this Rotary year is far from over… We are planning a few more activities down the road!
In October, we visited 1C Rowell Road to witness TWC2's feeding programme. Several of our members contributed fruits and toiletries. We also presented a cheque of S$2,400 to TWC2’s Immediate Past President Mr John Gee.
Working with ITE College East, we collected and contributed S$1,700 for the Philippines flood relief effort. This was distributed via our Sister Club, Rotary Club of Loyola Heights. Our ITE interactors also made a trip there and distributed 500 blankets and many other goodies (stationary, books, school bags etc) to the flood victims.
November, a few of our members attended Rotary Club of Cebu's 80th Anniversary Celebration and Medical Mission while they were there. They also visited the HLPP (Holistic Learning Preparedness Program) Centre @ Mandaue, Cebu.
HLLP is an educational initiative of Rotary Club of Cebu. It mixes academic, treatment, and livelihood preparedness trainings to address the distinct needs of over-aged high school students prone to injustice in the form of trafficking, drug running, child labor, and other plights of youth from troubled homes. Such treatment and livelihood preparedness program are strong tools against the destruction of these youth as they as empowered to discover their self-worth. The curriculum is intentional in raising youth who live lives beyond themselves… and for their families, communities, and nation. Our Club supports this project through a Matching Grant from The Rotary Foundation.
December 14, together with Rotary Club of Serangoon Gardens-Orchard and Rotary E-Club of Singapore, we jointly hosted a Christmas party for 100 old folks from NTUC Eldercare.
January this year, working with 'wonder woman', Fion Phua, we identified and distributed 200 mattresses to the elderlies living in 1 and 1½ room HDB flats. This was made possible due to the special efforts of Rtn Phil Shearer, Rtn Rovena Plique and PP James Tian. To the young ones, Gummy Vitamins were distributed thanks to Rtn Vicky Soo.
February is World Understanding Month. In line with the theme, we have organised a 9th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, 27 February 2013 @ The White Rabbit. 4 Rotarians from Rotary Club of Taipei Seven Stars, led by PE Air, will be in attendance. Titled “Strings of Peace”, the fund-raising is for three beneficiaries, namely, TWC2, Sri Lanka Harmony Centre (Project Harmony) and Global Dignity Cambodia.
Mr Baey Yam Keng, Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee (Culture, Community & Youth) and Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, is our Guest-of-Honour. Singapore's Premier String Quartet, the T'ang Quartet, will perform classics and allow like-minded, big hearted Rotarians and society's 'movers and shakers' to network and participate in our auction of memorabilia and lovely art pieces. Fellow Rotarians, if you are still undecided, now is the time to give a resounding “YES” to lend your support to the Club!
Another activity planned in May 2013 is the upcoming summer melodies charity performance. This is a Chinese cultural music and dance evening to be held at Kallang Theatre.
Rotary is definitely not a sprint… and it should be run like a marathon. Every Rotarian is a member of the relay team. I would encourage you to click this link http://vimeo.com/57072069 and listen to what RI General Secretary John Hewko has to share.
We teach our children, “Knowledge is king”. Similar, we must walk the talk. We can educate ourselves with Rotary knowledge by attending the District Assembly in Johor Bahru on 16 & 17 March 2013. 3 members - PE Vicky Soo, Director Ong Chee Wee and Director Ching Kwock Wing - are attending the President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) two days before District Assembly!
One more thing… As a Rotary CyberClub, have you logged in to www.rotaryeclub3310.org recently? As stipulated under our Club's Constitution, attendance at cybermeetings represents part of the requirement of membership. Check with CP Ban Seng, if you have forgotten your id and/or password.
Yours in Rotary
