President’s Message for July 2016

30 June 2016 2,036 views No Comment

kw-chingIn this first message of my second term as President of Rotary E-Club of 3310, allow me to first remind myself as well as our members in the club the object of Rotary.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Therefore, my mission for this term has got to be to encourage and foster the above together with the members of my club. Indeed, the Rotary Theme for 2016-2017 is Rotary Serving Humanity.

I think I cannot be at a better time, in a better place, and with the better people to serve humanity.

I am at a better time.

In 2016, the Rotary Council on Legislation discussed and passed 6 Board proposed legislations. The first among these is to allow for flexibility in club meetings and attendance. Now clubs will have the option to

  • Determine when and how often the club meets
  • Set applicable attendance requirements
  • Modify or eliminate termination policies for non-attendance

This enactment means every Rotary Club can do what an E-Club does. That means Rotary E-Club of 3310 has a 12 years head start to show the way. We have just launched TeamApp, a smartphone application, as a new initiative to help members connect using the cyberspace.

I am in a better place.

Rotary Foundation worldwide has accumulated huge funds. To fulfill the object of Rotary stated above, all we need to do is to find opportunities to serve humanity. I cannot be in a better place than in the Rotary family.

I am with better people.

The 5 core values of Rotary International are Fellowship, Integrity, Leadership, Diversity and Service. In short, we can use the acronym "FIELDS", where the extra "E" represents the extraordinary you ie the Rotarians… who are helping fellow citizens of the world by developing more green fields.

In the last three months, there was an influx of young professionals joining Rotary E-Club of 3310. We inducted new members in April, then May, and two new members were inducted at the installation dinner held on 15 June. I am expecting more to join us in the months to follow.

With these new members, and together with dedicated Rotarians who chartered this club and stayed, and dedicated Rotarians who joined over the years and stayed, I am confident that we are ready to live up to the Rotary Theme: ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY.
